Non Toxic Products: What’s the best way to find them?

Are you trying to switch to non toxic products, but don’t know where to start? I’m excited to introduce your new #1 resource for finding clean, non toxic products for personal and household use.

How to make the switch

As research on products develops, and diseases increase (sadly), many of us are looking to reduce the amount of toxins we are exposed to. This can be an overwhelming process, so my advice is to start simple with one category in your home – like makeup or cleaning supplies – and work your way through the rest of your personal and household items. In any case, this resource will be essential to your wellness journey.

Are you familiar with the Environmental Working Group? It’s a non profit corporation and community dedicated to researching the safety of products and protecting our environmental health. The information is shared with consumers to make healthy decisions. They have a whole site dedicated to testing and rating product safety called EWG Verified. There’s also an app

You can search tons of products from makeup, to cleaning products, and see how the EWG rates the safety of each item. Products that meet a high level of criteria receive a EWG VERIFIED mark.

For non toxic products, look for a low number or the EWG Certification

The ewg.org states: “EWG VERIFIED™ recognizes products that meet EWG’s strictest standards for your health. This means none of EWG’s chemicals of concern. This means full transparency.” It goes on to share that “2215 products have been approved for the EWG VERIFIED™ mark”.

I use this site to check products I already have, or search for products I need to buy. I most recently used it to find non toxic hair detangler and leave in condition for my 4 year old.

Here’s an example of how a product like sunscreen is rated. Note, this is an EWG certified product with the EWG badge in the top, left corner.

You can see it scores a 1 out of 10 (1 is the cleanest rating and 10 is the worst). You can also see how it compares to other sunscreen products in the chart on the lefthand side.

Save this to your bookmarks or download the app on your phone so it’s super convenient to do a quick health check before you buy a new personal or household item. Let me know if you give it a try and if you find it helpful.
